WA Libs candidate resigns over alleged links to drug trafficker
The Liberal Party in Western Australia is in disarray after one of its candidates for the upcoming federal election stood down following allegations of links with a convicted drug trafficker.

Paul Afkos's nomination for the marginal seat of Stirling was welcomed by John Howard 11 days ago, who said Mr Afkos would win the seat back from Labor, which holds the seat by 1.6 per cent.

Since then allegations have surfaced concerning the candidate's alleged links with a convicted drug trafficker.

The latest involves a $300,000 loan Mr Afkos had secured from the drug dealer.

Mr Afkos says he was unaware of the man's criminal record at the time, but today in a media statement announced he was withdrawing his candidacy in the interests of the Liberal Party, the Federal Government and his family.

The Liberal Party later issued a four line statement accepting the resignation.
