I feel invigorated by the change in Labor leadership, like many here. But it also seems that Mark Latham, although radical, is often radically right in terms of Labor politics.
My biggest concern in this regard is immigration. Where I would want a Labor government to have a more liberal immigration programme (not Liberal, but liberal), to end mandatory detention and to fast-track asylum claims, it seems that Latham is the man least likely to accomplish these things.
Instead, he is trying to out-Howard Howard. Today the papers announce that he is wanting to start a green card system here to 'stop illegal immigrants stealing Australian's jobs'. And we all know he is talking tough on immigration all the time.
So, am I hoping for too much that a government will be popularly elected in this country which can counterattack the fear and hatred campaign towards immigrants by the current government, stop stigmatising asylum seekers and start proposing humane alternatives?
