Just a thought exercise. If you are jealous of rich people because they don't deserve their wealth, yet you would like to win the lottery (which is the epitome of someone being rich without deserving it), can you explain your thought process?

The question involves the concept of what someone deserves, or perhaps if deserving things is considered relevant at all.

It is natural to wish to be made rich when you have to work your ass off for a low income. Regardless of weather or not you like rich people generally or not.

My jealousy of wealthy people is the very reason why I do the lotto.

I think you are being imprecise. One might be jealous of rich people because they are wealthy, but resentful because they have stolen it from the productive.

You are far better off saving that money until you have a small sum, and then investing it. A small investment in a start-up operation can be extremely lucrative. The more you have to invest, of course, the more you can make.

Risk is always a factor, of course, but you can find great stuff out there to take a small sum and become wealthy. Your risk is far less than if you spend it on lotto tickets that have an infinitesimally small chance of success.

This is what I was getting at. If you have a policy complaint that's one thing but a lot of people are just mad that they aren't on top. I think things like the lotto illustrate this.

There is a big difference between wanting to be rich, and being jealous of those who are. most people I know, who attained wealth, got there thru a great deal of hard work and sacrifice. Rarely do people get wealth without risking things, hard work, and taking advantage of opportunities. If you're jealous of them, then that your person failure talking.

Even socialists don't want to abolish wealth. A socialist society would still have very wealthy people and significant wealth disparities between individuals, there just wouldn't be the disparities of power, access, and opportunity which form the basis of class.

Most people that are rich were born rich.

Of course 'rich' is a relative term, but beyond a certain threshold of wealth holdings, what I have said in the previous line is definitely the case.

See Thomas Pickety, Capital in the 21st Century if you demand rigorous statistical proof of this (a book which I don't really endorse but which does have some redeeming qualities, which are exceeded by negative qualities. The overriding purpose of the book, which is something I find distasteful, seems to be the advocacy of a worldwide tax authority, e.g. a one-world government).

If you can do what you want, when you want, and aren't worried about bills, and do the same for your kids, and even friends, if you so choose, then you are rich.

Sounds like a recipe for decadence and perversion. The elimination of restraints on our actions usually brings out the more undesirable side of humans. We need to be restrained by society and limited wealth. Humans are at their best during times of hardship.
Like most, I have dreamed of winning the lottery. I would give enough to my kids to have a greater freedom of choice, yet not enough to eliminate their need to make choices. The rest I would put in a foundation to promote autonomy. I have zero desire to keep more than a $100,000 for myself.
I have known a few that can handle wealth, but not many.

Only if you are decadent and perverse to begin with.

It can also bring out the best in people.

Wealth allows a greater number of choices, as money isn't a constraint. You have a very odd impression of what wealth can do. :eh:

It's not just about "yourself" but friends and family. I suppose, if you were a very selfish person, you might just spend it all on yourself, but few of us are like that.

Also, $100,000 doesn't make you rich. That'd simply be a windfall. Over $1,000,000 and you're talking about some wealth.

I doubt very much that you've known ANY that have had any real wealth.

What can I say? You made another incorrect assumption about me.
Yes, I know $100,000 is not a lot. That was my point.
