A buddy of mine is a high school drop out; never made it past the 11th grade.

He now owns his own plumbing company and he's damn near printing money. I know what I paid him to re-pipe one of my houses about two months ago, and it wasn't cheap...

They have turned college into just one more greed scam. If I were starting out I would look into becoming a plumber ….. endless demand and big pay. Comes with a lot of shit though.

Sage advice though. I agree. I agree about real estate also. They are not making any more of it.

Unthinking Majority wrote:Trump official says Statue of Liberty verse welcoming immigrants is about 'people coming from Europe':

:excited:

Well, that's a fair argument.

Considering where it was placed, at the base of the statue which immigrants first saw as they came through New York Harbor, it's not at all outside the realm of possibility that was the intent.

Of course, the only person who can answer that for sure died in 1887...

Well, it certainly is not about illegal immigrants coming up from Central America.

Hindsite foolishly said: Well, it certainly is not about illegal immigrants coming up from Central America.

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome;
her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

The thing about Republicans these days is that they simply believe it is fine to talk when they know nothing about their subject. Of course I am certain that Hindsite has never actually read the sonnet and even if he did would not get the references. Maybe I am wrong. Naaa.

Hindsite probably would be very confused about Emma Lazarus, the writer of the Sonnet. He displaces all his anti-Semitism onto Muslims, so he can't attack her Jewish ethnicity, but he'd still want to if he found out she was a Socialist :D

Maybe he does understand that the Statue of Liberty was built well over a decade before the sonnet was written, and that the Statue of Liberty was not built to commemorate or encourage immigration in any way. Rather it is a Roman goddess, Libertas, and commemorates the Declaration of Independence and secondarily the end of slavery. It never was about open borders. In fact, during its construction, the US passed the Chinese Exclusion Act. It was the first law banning a specific ethnic group or national origin from emigrating to the United States. Grover Cleveland was president when the Statue of Liberty was completed, and he signed the Page Act prohibiting Chinese women from emigrating to the United States. Chinese exclusion was repealed in 1943 under Roosevelt, when it the US finally decided to allow 105 Chinese people a year to emigrate to the US. Like today, it was working class whites and labor unions who were pushing the immigration restrictions. Emma Lazarus' poem wasn't added to the inside of the statue's base until 1903, and she was more particularly concerned with the plight of Ashkenazy Jews in Russia.

No he doesn't know that. Neither do you. Do try to read more carefully. She composed the poem to help raise funds for the pedestal. But it doesn't matter anyway. For over 120 years the statue has been associated with immigration to the US. Further, it is the sonnet we are talking about and not the stature. A subtlety that was lost on the idiots who are trying to rehabilitate it.

I love watching idiot libs and self-proclaimed "true conservatives" as they lose their shit over this.

No one's going to change the plaque on the pedestal...

As usual you missed the point again. Here is a homework assignment. Read what the Trump administration said yesterday. Then post. You are making yourself look very uninformed. Maybe it is too hard for you.

Trump pushed back his tariffs against China again, until December. I guess he isn't so confident in this economic plan.

That it's going to impact consumers is obvious by this:

US President Donald Trump, speaking to reporters, said that the delay was in part to avoid hitting US shoppers this Christmas.

So much for this not affecting Americans...

@BigSteve Liberal - an adherent of Liberalism.

Liberalism - is a political and moral philosophy based on liberty, consent of the governed, and equality before the law.

So you admit that you defended the Trump administration and its spokespeople without even reading or watching the source. Why am I not surprised?

Makes your insults seem a bit hollow don't you think? (Did I leave out a period?)

Mr. Trump's campaign reportedly has not paid more than $500,000 to the city of El Paso for his campaign rally there earlier this year. Apparently a number of other cities are having this problem. Mr. Trump seems to be running his campaign as shabbily as he runs his real estate business.

More Fake News.

Only a monumental dumb ass would deny that the campaign owes the money. Every major news outlet has reported it including Fox, the WSJ and Brietbart.

There are people who are just trolls. There are also people who are simply not smart enough to understand. I wonder if any of them are here.

You've provided nothing to support your idiotic claim, so you are thereby (and rightly) dismissed.
