So apparently another dictator is attempting to suppress his people? Any ideas what is going on?

Oh Cool, so nobody knows or cares on what is going on in Uganda. Don't you two complain about people not caring about deaths outside of EU/US? @skinster , @QatzelOk

It looks like there is a thriving music scene in the country and Bobi Wine has released a song to raise awareness about the coronavirus pandemic. Beside being a rapper, Bobi Wine is also the Ugandan presidential candidate and he may be as serious as Kanye West as a candidate. He was detained for allegedly holding a rally in violation of restrictions on gatherings aimed at curbing the spread of the pandemic. His arrest triggered protests in the capital and other major towns because he is as popular and influential as Lady Gaga in Uganda.

Yes, but this includes YOU, and your OP isn't an OP, it's a test for other people.

Perhaps if you had actually posted some research and your own opinion, people would respond.

As it is, there's nothing to respond to.

You have created a "somethin's goin' on in Uganda or sumthin'" thread and then bitched that the world didn't dogpile onto it.

Try posting content in the OP next time, and not just a video.

Or perhaps it is just an incident that has come up on a slow press day and nobody has focused on Ugandan politics before now. My knowledge of this is perhaps no better than yours but it seems a popular musician with political ambitions has been jailed for Covid related purposes because of the threat he poses to the government. A government that is just a tinpot regime - which is the same as the rest of the tinpot regimes in Africa I guess. I don't think we can expect the government to be toppled over this and I doubt the West is going to interfere here if that is what you are wondering.

@JohnRawls

I have just read that the civil unrest is the worse it has been in Uganda for many years since his (Wines) arrest and it is the civil unrest that makes this news worthy as it is widespread there. So that is what is going on.

@B0ycey

Yeah, it is hard to get information about Uganda. You probably need to speak the proper language to find out more. For example, it wasn't easy to get information on Belarus but i know Russian which made it 10 times easier.

Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has been in power for decades and such a long stint as president is very indicative of a dictatorship as well as the arrest and harassment of the opposition. I hope Uganda can one day realize true democracy, but that being said, I don't think we should intervene there.

Why so salty?

Because I'm from a long line of international sailors and ocean-swimming refugees fleeing the atrocities of the British Empire.

Plus, you asked me why I was so "butthurt" which I replied to in the same vocabulary.

I got an A for appropriateness from the teacher for this.

Incidentally, there IS an Africa forum here at pofo.

It is an ongoing event. So it is Todays News.

Ummm... the Thunder Bay lad throwing a trailer hitch at a First Nations woman is also ongoing, but of an incredibly local (and possibly continental) importance.

Likewise this Uganda story fits into the situation that most of the continent of Africa is going through now. It isn't "Today's News" because it is of continental importance rather than international.

Likewise, when European cartoonists piss people off and get shot, that is of European interest only. It really doesn't concern anyone who doesn't live there, and is only PUSHED IN OUR FACES for the corporate propaganda it generates.

I think you are trying to do the same thing - use an "African" story to enforce some very European prejudices.

What do these two situations in Africa have in common ?
Ugandan police did not immediately respond to calls from CNN, but in a statement posted on its official website on Wednesday, the Inspector General pointed to tightened Covid-19 enforcement around campaign events.

While authorities have said the restrictions are necessary to curb the spread of Covid-19, opposition members say that they are an excuse to curb campaigning and intimidate opposition supporters before the upcoming January election.

Following news of Wine's arrest, protesters took to the streets of Kampala, clashing with police and military who responded with tear gas.

Another presidential candidate, Mugisha Muntu, announced that he would pause his campaign until the release.

"The Government must ensure the safety of all election candidates and their supporters, whatever political affiliation," tweeted the European Union's foreign affairs representative Josep Borrell Fontelles on Thursday.

Tensions reached a peak when the Tigray People’s Liberation Front criticized Ahmed’s decision to postpone the nationwide August 2020 elections indefinitely because of Covid-19. In an act of defiance Tigrayan leaders recalled their federal representatives from Addis Ababa and held their own elections.

People look to be *glossing over* that it was the *police* there who inflicted the death toll in the dozens -- this is far more violence, and in one event, than all of the violence and deaths during the Black Lives Matter movement this summer and associated fascist reaction, plus that of Belarus, Thailand, etc., just off the top of my head.

There was also police violence in Nigeria recently.

Isn't the arrested politician/musician kind of a socialist/commie. At least the pictures that I saw of him, he was wearing a hat with a soviet star on it. You get what i mean. So I would assume that our local leftists would care at least a bit.

The People Power, Our Power movement (also known as the People Power Movement) is a resistance pressure group in Uganda. It is led by Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, who is the MP for Kyadondo East constituency.[1] The movement seeks to unite Ugandans on issues such as ending human rights abuse, corruption and redefining the rule of law, with a focus on young Ugandans.[1] The movement was primarily sparked by civil unrest with Yoweri Museveni's extended presidency, after he announced plans to extend his third-longest tenure in Africa by seeking re-election in 2021.[2]

If local leftists knew more about the situation all over Africa, they would care a great deal.

But our news corporations think of the continent of Africa as "a bunch of resources without a people." And they want us to ignore what it going on there so that our mineral companies can strip mine it to death and kill all the local cultures.

This is why we don't have enough access to information about Africa (or Latin America).

People say "it's because we're more like" certain countries that we hear more about them. But this is false since African-Americans and Caribbean countries would be "closer to Africa," and Quebec would be "closer to Latin America." In both cases, we are both (African-Americans, Quebecois) inundated with the stories of rich white nations where rich capitalists live.
