The Chinese forced a low fertility rate on their people and it did not work.

The problem is it did work.

If they didn't, that would also be a problem, if one were to think about it for more than 5 seconds. China is a demographic nightmare, more people would have used more resources, they're desperately short as it is.

Here's a clue, there are always problems. Smart countries work their problems, dumb ones hire trolls...

The law was tyrannical and that is problematic. It caused selective abortions of females, and men do not have women to date. The country has too many old people.

During that time China adopted capitalism and the standard of living improved.

Telling Italian men that they should have more sex has to be the easiest five year plan in the history of the world.

An effective policy is the expansion of public child care.

Most developed nations are trying that approach.
However, it seems the people of this era see children as a burden and that may be a difficult hurdle.

I had five children and my wife did not have to work. All my five kids are married with children and hence I have a huge family created by my sperms. Every weekend is filled with family activities, never a dull moment. My best friend in HS never had kids. Today it is only him and his wife and he admitted it is a rather dull existence.

I am firmly planted in the center. That means I agree with some left and right wing issues. In other words I am a moderate with an open mind. It seems you are offended when I said socialism can be like a religion. Why would you take offense about that?

You keep dodging the questions.

You are a fundamentalist who is dogmatic about his rejection of the left and some of the right.

Why are you unwilling to discuss your fundamentalist beliefs and how they threaten others?

You are a stem man and perhaps never studied history. The islamists have had their sights on Europe for centuries. Are you been naive on purpose?

So you think Muslims want to destroy western civilization.

Please oresent this historical evidence.

What will be the fate of an ethnic group where couples have a fertility rate that is well below 2.0? You are a stem man so this is right down your alley.

Are Muslims keeping white women from breeding?

Also, you never answered my questions about Italy and Italians. I thought you were here to learn, and I am trying to teach you.

Unthinking Majority wrote:I have no idea what demographic trends project in Italy specifically. But I do know that their birthrate is 1.3 per woman, which is among the very lowest in the world, and well below replacement levels. So if that continues then eventually people of Italian ancestry in Italy will cease to exist. Even Chile has below replacement reproduction.

Technology and globalization are changing many things. People no longer live in the same kinds of societies they did for thousands of years. Maybe one day there will only be one race and culture of people, all mixed together.

Let me know when Italy is going to succumb to the dark skinned Muslim hordes. Thanks.

Since you are all about victimhood I bet a case of Coca Cola you see Islamists as victims. People with this mindset will never say anything wrong about Islam because they fear the label of Islamophobe.

I am surprised you know so little about history.

You didn't answer his question, largely because you can't, you don't know enough to actually understand.

So here's a dirty little 'secret', it's about oil.

@Julian658

So your evidence shows that they conquered Europe 1400 years ago.

That says nothing about what Muslims want now.

So, your evidence is fail.

Now, are you going to address the questions about Italy? You might learn something!

Sorry about going off topic, I've been to Italy twice, a couple more days and I'd have been there a month.

It's such a nice place to be, and one of the world's best places to ride a bike. They view cycling the way we like baseball. So they like seeing cyclists, even encouraging. First time I encountered that, I was waiting for traffic only to discover traffic was waiting for me.

What a place.

Most advanced economies have a declining population but a stable economy whereas poor countries have a growing population which goes hand in hand with a unstable economy. So yes, I consider both Italy's and Japan's economic situation better than that of Nigeria.

This phenomenon exists independently from China's one-child policy. You'll find this surplus of men also in countries such as India where couples are free to have as many children as they want to.

@Puffer Fish

Birth rate has decreased here in the U.S. Not enough good paying jobs around to have kids. Kids cost a lot of money so you got to have plenty of good paying jobs around AND people have to have access and get hired into those good paying jobs. If they don't have good paying jobs or can't get hired into them, many will elect not to have kids because they can't afford to have kids. Which means the country has a low birth rate and that in turn can hurt the economy and the labor force. But what can working people do? They have no choice but to elect not to have kids given a lack of good paying jobs with good benefits to be able to afford having and raising a family. Not sure if this is the case in Italy and it's reason for a low birth rate.

At social level, the Italian situation is not different from the situation in other European countries.

Labor market is a problem, as senior employees enjoy significant better protections than younger ones... put this together with a contracting economy...

A bigger problem is the structure of the welfare. Italian welfare is rather generous, but as matter of fact it redistributes money from the young people to the old one. That's not the ideal for increasing the birth rate...
