Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Monday he welcomed a NATO statement confirming Ukraine's eventual entry into the military alliance.

Zelenskyy's administration has urged NATO to speed up Ukraine's entry through a Membership Action Plan (MAP). Earlier Monday he told Reuters that he wanted a clear "yes" or "no" from United States President Joe Biden on giving Ukraine such a plan.

"NATO leaders confirmed that (Ukraine) will become a member of the Alliance and the MAP is an integral part of the membership process," Zelenskyy wrote on Twitter."

"President Joe Biden made clear Monday that Ukraine does not yet have the go-ahead to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, a move long sought by Ukraine and vehemently opposed by Russia.

Biden, who has previously called for Ukraine to join NATO, made clear that such a move had not been approved yet.

"School's out on that question. It remains to be seen," he said when asked for a "yes or no" about Ukraine joining the organization. "In the meantime we will do all we can to put Ukraine in a position to be able to continue to resist Russian physical aggression."

"It depends on whether they meet the criteria. The fact is they still have to clean up corruption and the fact is they have to meet other criteria to get into the action plan."

As much as I would like for Ukraine and Belarus to join Nato, this is highly unlikely. Ukraine has disputed territories and Belarus has a dictator in power. Unless those questions are resolved then it is not possible.

Best we could do for Ukraine right now is cooperation. :hmm:

Why would having a dictator matter in terms of joining NATO? One of the founding members was a fascist dictatorship until 1974.

"Ukraine has disputed territories" wrong , edit: Ukraine has occupied by Moscow territories, and NATO has formula for this , so dont worry

NATO is a military alliance but there is a big ideological component to it also. Long story short, it is the 21st century and cold war is over so there shouldn't be exceptions unless China tries to build Warsaw pact 2.0 China version.

Disputed territories is a legal term and occupied territories is a subcategory of that. It is not just about Crimea and Donbass but other borders and island questions also.

This is just rhetoric. NATO isn't about promoting any kind of ideology other than that which produces profits for the ruling classes of the respective members.

Through a lens of primitive Marxist understanding, sure.

Zelensky mispoke. And this is the second time. Following a phone conversation with Biden Ukraine mischaracterised Biden as supporting MAP for Ukraine.

NATO rejects Ukrainian president's 'confirmation' of entry into alliance

June 15 (UPI) -- NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Tuesay denied the announcement of the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky that NATO leaders had "confirmed" Ukraine would become a member.

Stoltenberg said the vote on Ukraine did not meet unanimous consent.

"To agree on the membership action plan, you need consensus among 30 allies. This was not the focus of this summit," Stoltenberg said.

Marxists states all are and were economically underdeveloped and autocratic so your view is understandable and wrong.

Ah yes the mighty csto that countries join and do nothing even if their members or allies get attacked.

I suppose you're referring to the conflict that started in 1988 while both Armenia and Azerbaijan were in the soviet union? Conflicts over territories that were present prior to membership into CSTO are not covered by the agreement. The disputed territory Armenia warred over with Azerbaijan is not in the defensive area.
