At least one person has died and dozens are missing after the collapse of a 12-storey residential building north of Miami, Florida, officials say.

The number of people who have been located now stands at 102, while 99 are still unaccounted for, according to Miami-Dade Mayor Danielle Levine-Cava.

It is unclear how many people were in the building at the time.

The cause of the collapse - affecting about half of the 130 units in the complex - remains unclear.

The block in the town of Surfside was built in 1980.

A number of Latin American migrants have been reported missing by their consulates.

Relatives of the first lady of Paraguay are also among the missing, Paraguayan officials said. Rescuers were unable to contact the sister and brother-in-law of first lady Silvana López Moreira, along with their three children and a domestic worker.

It's doing the rounds because some important diplomats/relatives of politicians were in that building.

The building seemingly needed repairs, but just how fucked up was it to end like this?

Evidently satellite images from about 3 years ago show the block roof leaning in some way. It needed evacuation and controlled demolition years ago. There are a number of identically designed buildings all over this region. Time to look into them.

Firstly I would like to add to the condolence for the families who have lost loved ones and the people who needlessly lost their lives. But given only last month people were arguing that CAPITALISM enhanced building regulations and standards, I am afraid we can put the debate to rest now so I want to say this. Given the speed and the unforgiven nature of this accident, I am going to say two things happened here. Firstly building supports look like they were encased in concrete which were compromised and as such a defect of Western buildings pre 2000. And the second nobody has been monitoring or repairing defects in order to prevent supports being compromised. I would say both incidents are indicators of profits before safety, very much a weakness of Capitalism. Not that Socialism housing is known to be better of course. But it does suggest that buildings are only as good as the regulations and maintenance it has and economic models doesn't come into play given this type of accident shouldn't really be occurring in the wealthiest nation on the planet.

If you act like a 3rd world country long enough, you get to be one.

But...I'm worried the collapse might be the beginning of a trend, if seawater is got to the foundation and rotted it.
