"Democracy is bleeding out, and for at least a year, it has been obvious that it is too late to save it. But seemingly every columnist and pundit from MSNBC to Fox to the major papers and even higher-brow magazines is committed to pretending otherwise.

Like the people I am critiquing here, I spend a lot of time writing about American elections, political strategies, and so on. I do not, however, have any personal or professional reasons to pretend that elections are fairly democratic when they are not. I will most likely continue to write post-mortems for American democracy for many years to come, because there is a lot to say about a country that has fallen into an authoritarian, post-democratic dystopia.
And so it will be here, with Republicans finding it useful to tantalize us with the idea that future elections might go either way, to keep everyone interested and invested in the system. But it will be a sham, because once they have seized power, Republicans will not relinquish it.

But even if that could have happened, why is that a problem? In the high school civics version of this, a party that -- no matter its selection process -- nominates a weirdo will lose in the general election when voters abandon that party. That that is not happening anymore is not because of nomination rules but because Republican voters will vote for their nominee no matter what. And weirdos like that will win general elections in many more places than they otherwise would, because of voter suppression and gerrymandering.

And so it will be here, with Republicans finding it useful to tantalize us with the idea that future elections might go either way, to keep everyone interested and invested in the system. But it will be a sham, because once they have seized power, Republicans will not relinquish it."

You never know, but this is what I think is our fate, followed by an across the board decline of the country.

You democrats deserve EVERYTHING you get and then some.

Could Trump Be Impeached Shortly After He Takes Office?
It's highly improbable, but law scholars and political junkies are speculating about it.

Dems pretty much can't win without Penn..

If Mastriano becomes Guv in Penn, he has said (in so many words) that he will make sure the election comes out the way he wants, a Republican win.

Which is to say, democracy dies right then and there. Even if the Justice Dept goes after him, it will be too little, too late.

And that's just one place, there are plenty of other attempts to subvert and destroy democracy going on.

[Nota bene. I self-identify as a secular humanist. That places me outside, but certainly not above, the current red/blue, lib/con, Dem/Rep dichotomy of United States of America politics.]

The specific form of constitutional democracy found in the United States of America has existed for centuries. This has been due in no small part to unspoken agreements between the two major political parties on how to go about divvying up the power of government. These two factions, as they would have been termed by the founding fathers [Cf. the Federalist Papers,] kept the peace between them, more or less, until the past few decades.

The divergence this time, and there have been notable ones in the past, has a catalyst: the social internet. One need but read some of the threads on the 'net to sense the alienation in the references to 'them'.

Whether the US will re-establish some degree of equilibrium again remains to be seen.

Regards, stay safe 'n well 'n remember the Big 5.

Hi again, late.

The Big 5 are the 5 steps each of us can take to reduce the spread of airborne viral and bacterial diseases. They've been around and valid for over two centuries. They remain so today. They are:

1. Wash hands frequently.
2. Wear a mask in public areas.
3. Maintain physical distance in public areas.
4. Obtain a vaccination if one is available.
5. Up-date disease information from reputable sources.

Regards, best to you and yours.

You democrats are going to lose your ass in November, and that is democracy at work. Looks like you're crafting the concession speech.

You've been trying to make political hay, all this time, from a differential between soft-fascism (Democrats), and hard-fascism (Republicans).

Yeeeeeaaaaahhhhhhh, sorry, BS, but the *culture wars* don't count, because no one is fooled when you try to turn worldly matters into *celebrity culture*.

So, yeah, what matters in the world is a little more *weighty* than the journalism *porn* you post everywhere.

Did someone *tell* you you're not supposed to get into social and political concerns? Is *that* the reason for your displacement into *celebrity* culture?

I hereby *release* you from ever having to utter another talking point, *ever again*.

A self-proclaimed marxist says *culture wars* don't count. Well, I guess that must be true then.
