"The divergent approaches threaten to deepen regional divisions over abortion that had been somewhat muted by Supreme Court precedents that established abortion as a constitutional right.

“We haven’t seen this kind of battle about … the reach of the jurisdiction of one state over another in a very long time,” said Wendy Parmet, director of Northeastern University’s Center for Health Policy and Law. “Nothing of this magnitude have we seen since the Civil War.”

Republican-controlled states also are setting up potential constitutional showdowns by banning abortion pills, which directly conflicts with U.S. Food and Drug Administration approvals of the medications.

But bans on abortion pills also may face lawsuits from the federal government. Attorney General Merrick Garland issued a statement Friday reinforcing the Justice Department’s view under the Biden administration that the FDA approval of the pills means they should be available in all 50 states.

“States may not ban mifepristone based on disagreement with the FDA’s expert judgment about its safety and efficacy,” Garland said."

Nobody is talking about business yet. The labor market is tight, and it will continue getting tighter for a generation. That will force business to worry about the safety and happiness of their workers.

Guess what.

They do fuck up everything.

Really, democrats aren't much better, but at this particular juncture, what republicans are doing and advocating for is far more insidious and destructive to the fabric of democracy.

Of course, they are too stupid to understand that they are throwing the baby out with the bath water.

It would be one of history’s greatest ironies if the Republican Party - the party of Abraham Lincoln, the party which fought a brutal Civil War to preserve the Union in the face of treasonous Secessionism by reactionary forces - ended up triggering the breakup of the Union a century and a half later. And not caring that they had done so.

Americans will pay a high price for their hatred and ignorance of history….

*Really*, Rancid -- ?

Are you just lobbing a trite morsel out there, or do you really *believe* that there's a 'democracy' somewhere in there that's worth saving?

Any comment on the characterization of 'late capitalism' -- ? (Any lexical resemblance to any users on this thread is purely coincidental.) (grin)

'Democracy' brought us the opioid crisis and Trump's attempted coup.

I think these people are too stupid to understand what history even is.

Worth saving, yes, but not going to be saved.

Capitalism can evolve, as it has evolved. However, those Republicans which wish to destroy the US won't let it evolve anyway.

Capitalism brought that crises, not democracy.

Hey, just enjoy and watch the collapse of America. Just don't bet on it would get replaced with a workers paradise.

Here's the thing, though -- capitalism is *regulated*, right -- ?

So why wasn't there any kind of *intervention* into Sackler's drug dynasty, for so long -- (!)

I'll also draw a rough parallel -- with apologies -- to the lack of Allied intervention against the *Nazis* early-on, when the information of atrocities was already *known* by the authorities.

Opioid lawsuits

In 2019, a suit was brought in the Southern District of New York, which included more than 500 counties, cities and Native American tribes. It named eight family members: Richard, Jonathan, Mortimer, Kathe, David, Beverly and Theresa Sackler as well as Ilene Sackler Lefcourt.[67] In addition, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Utah all brought suits against the family. On the federal level, the family faced an overall bundle of 1,600 cases.[68]

According to the New Yorker, Purdue Pharma played a "special role" in the opioid crisis because the company "was the first to set out, in the nineteen-nineties, to persuade the American medical establishment that strong opioids should be much more widely prescribed—and that physicians’ longstanding fears about the addictive nature of such drugs were overblown."[69]

The issue of why the Allies did not act on early reports of atrocities in the Auschwitz concentration camp by destroying it or its railways by air during World War II has been a subject of controversy since the late 1970s.

I certainly cannot say that Republicans screw up everything. In truth, I cannot say much at all about Republicans in general. I can, however, say what the Republican Party in Texas stands for. It's detailed in their party platform for 2022.

A copy can be found at: https://texasgop.org/wp-content/uploads ... 6-2022.pdf

It makes interesting reading.

Regards, stay safe 'n well.

1543 d. Prohibition of a Palestinian state within the historical borders of Israel, as it would
1544 jeopardize Israel’s security and it would force Israel to give up land that God gave to the
1545 Jewish people as referenced in Genesis.

In general, it's about having the right kind of regulation. For example, we are not in danger of another 2008 housing crisis due to regulation. THat problem has been fixed. That's not to say there are no other problems in housing, but regulation is also an ever evolving thing as is capitalism.

Also, the opioid drug dynasty has been busted up significantly and more regulated now. There have been many trials on this so far. Just as there were trials for cigarettes/tobacco. I predict we will see trials in the future against social media's horrible effects too. We know facebook is covering up the fact their product is destructive to people.

It's also unclear how your socialist workers utopia would magically fix all these things.

Okay, are you going to regulate *warfare*, too? Anything to say about Yemen?

The faith that it will just be better because you say so.

Anyway, I'm not against socialistic policies. As I've said before, housing, healthcare, and education shouldn't be left up to the free market. Cell phones, TVs, shampoo and other shit can be left up to the free market.

Since 2011, Yemen has been in a state of political crisis starting with street protests against poverty, unemployment, corruption, and president Saleh's plan to amend Yemen's constitution and eliminate the presidential term limit.[18] President Saleh stepped down and the powers of the presidency were transferred to Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi. Since then, the country has been in a civil war (alongside the Saudi Arabian-led military intervention aimed at restoring Hadi's government) with several proto-state entities claiming to govern Yemen: the Cabinet of Yemen/Presidential Leadership Council, Supreme Political Council, and the Southern Transitional Council.[19][20][21][22][23] At least 56,000 civilians and combatants have been killed in armed violence in Yemen since January 2016.[24] The war has resulted in a famine affecting 17 million people.[25] The lack of safe drinking water, caused by depleted aquifers and the destruction of the country's water infrastructure, has also caused the largest, fastest-spreading cholera outbreak in modern history, with the number of suspected cases exceeding 994,751.[26][27] Over 2,226 people have died since the outbreak began to spread rapidly at the end of April 2017.[27][28] The ongoing humanitarian crisis and conflict has received widespread criticism for having a dramatic worsening effect on Yemen's humanitarian situation, that some say has reached the level of a "humanitarian disaster"[29] and some have even labelled it as a genocide.[30][31][32] It has worsened the country's already-poor human rights situation.

Would you have any objection to a 'single-payer' approach to housing, healthcare, and education?

What's your problem with *workers* at the factories that produce cell phones, TVs, shampoo, etc., actually *controlling* their workplaces, including what's produced there -- ?

Let me put it *this* way -- it's a 'Point-A-to-Point-B' kind of thing, and in the here-and-now I and others can at least make sure that things are going in a *direction* / trajectory that would end up arriving at socialism. So, do workers actually control their own workplaces, etc.
