"This isn’t your country anymore. You are now governed by a secretive and unaccountable junta in long black robes, and there are going to be some changes around here.

I describe them with a term more commonly used for Latin American military regimes because, well, that’s what it feels like.

They want a country where women, once again, are at best second-class citizens. Their decision Friday to strike down the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling that protected the constitutional right to abortion means that women, unlike men, no longer have dominion over their own bodies.

An America that already has astronomically high levels of gun violence can probably look forward to even more homicides, more suicides, more accidental gun deaths. Yes, this sounds insane. I never said our new rulers were sane.

Let’s be honest: Our rulers don’t come out and say so, but obviously they see this as a Christian nation, not a secular one. We once believed that non-Christians had the right not to have Christianity imposed on them in the public sphere. That was then; this is now.

The junta does believe, however, that money has rights and freedoms. Attempts to curb the ability of corporations and wealthy individuals to purchase the legislative outcomes they want are out of the question.

There is one way, and only one way, to keep this dystopia from being fully realized: Elect presidents, members of Congress, governors and state legislators who will use all their powers — which together are greater than the junta’s — to bend the arc of our moral universe back toward justice.

Our votes are the only weapons we have. Either we use them or we lose the future."

Republicans have been riding the road to hell for long time, and dragging us along.

Are we there yet?

Soon.

@late,
I'm very, very concerned that the Dems in power will fail to act in the ways necessary to counter the current Repud Party plsy to sieze power and end democracy.
I just don't see them having the necessary steps that need to be taken.

In my thread in North America I explain that we need to UN-pack the USSC before it rules that state legislatures can do away with elections or still have them, but ignore the result if voter suppression isn't enough to let the Repuds retain power.

This Supreme Court is not at all activist. If they were activist, they would be writing legislation contravening previous decisions by deciding HOW to change previous decisions.

That's not what they're doing. They're stating we determined what you wanted is NOT Constitutional and it's up to the states how to decide to fix it, or give up. They're doing their job. :D

It's a beautiful thing, also! They told the EPA "NO!" earlier in the week and then vacated several gun control laws today that some leftists actually thought were legal. They also poked NY gun control in the eye.

In other words, they're slashing and burning previous decisions that were BS from the start, but they aren't planting new seeds.

They aren't writing legislation to compensate, like that idiot Roberts did for Obobocare.

That's up to other entities to do. If they were selfish, they would say "we'll do it", but they are saying "nahhh, your unconstitutional horseshit won't fly, but it's up to you to fix it".

"Black's Law Dictionary defines judicial activism as a "philosophy of judicial decision-making whereby judges allow their personal views about public policy, among other factors, to guide their decisions."

There is a ton of things wrong with their decisions. For example, the motivation behind the overturn of Roe v Wade is religion. You could write a book about everything wrong with that one, because a bunch of legal scholars already have.

But I do enjoy your fiction.

Yeah, so you say, but no. They've provided plenty of jurisprudence into WHY they overturned these laws.

Jurisprudence is a theory or system of law.

You use that to produce an analysis that meets the standards of jurisprudence; which they have failed to do. They are political hacks.

Well, you're entitled your opinion, and I couldn't give a flying fook about your reading on what they've failed to do or not.

From recollection, people didn't want to vote in Clinton because she was such a blatant warmonger, and would worsen U.S. involvement in Syria. So Trump was seen at least as being non-interventionist, if domestically reactionary.

And Trump delivered. Here's the overturning of Roe v. Wade, from his handpicking of such justices. Trump went after the *presidency*, too, with the failed fascist coup.

*I'd* say thank the two-party system -- nowhere else in society and life would people settle for only one out of two options to choose from.

I accept your implicit admission of defeat.

It's not really a constitutional crisis, though -- that was averted by denying the coup to Trump.

Law runs on trust, and the radicals on the SC are using that trust as if it was toilet paper.

'Trust' implies some kind of *socialization*, and the three branches of the U.S. government are quite *detached* and *institutionalized*, away from the political sentiment / demands of the people -- otherwise abortion would be enshrined in a federal law by now, and NATO would no longer exist.

Perhaps the take-away here is that the Supreme Court is not about to be *constitutionally* reformed by popular will, meaning that reformism doesn't have a way-forward right now.

In December 2021, 114 Democratic House members signed a letter that urged President Biden to lift restrictions and sanctions against Cuba in order to make their access to food and medicine easier.[35]

The administration indicated that it would not rush to lift U.S. sanctions on Venezuela, but would consider easing sanctions if Maduro takes took "serious steps" to negotiate seriously with the opposition.[50]

In early February 2021, Biden indicated that the U.S. would not lift sanctions on Iran until that country stopped enriching uranium.[166]

Despite pressure from human rights groups and some Democrats to do so, the administration did not impose any direct sanctions on MBS personally, determining that the damage to Saudi–U.S. relations would be too grave.[193][194][195]

America is merely rediscovering its inward soul, its true self. It is reverting to type, as it inevitably must.
