Pants-of-dog wrote:@BlutoSays cited a report from the Heartland Institute that claims that global warming is not real.

Instead, the article claims, this is an error based on improper siting of thermometers. The weather stations that give us the surface temperature data are mostly located close to heat sources, and this improper location and the adjacent heat source are responsible for the measured warming.

So, this claim was studied and here is what the scientists found:

On the reliability of the U.S. surface temperature record
    Matthew J. Menne,1 Claude N. Williams Jr.,1 and Michael A. Palecki1
    Received 27 August 2009; revised 24 December 2009; accepted 7 January 2010; published 8 June 2010.
[1] Recent photographic documentation of poor siting conditions at stations in the U.S. Historical Climatology Network (USHCN) has led to questions regarding the reliability
of surface temperature trends over the conterminous United States (CONUS). To evaluate the potential impact of poor siting/instrument exposure on CONUS temperatures, trends derived from poor and well sited USHCN stations were compared. Results indicate that there is a mean bias associated with poor exposure sites relative to good exposure sites; however, this bias is consistent with previously documented changes associated with the widespread conversion to electronic sensors in the USHCN during the last 25 years. Moreover, the sign of the bias is counterintuitive to photographic documentation of poor exposure because associated instrument changes have led to an artificial negative (“cool”) bias in maximum temperatures and only a slight positive (“warm”) bias in minimum temperatures. These results underscore the need to consider all changes in observation practice when determining the impacts of siting irregularities. Further, the influence of nonstandard siting on temperature trends can only be quantified through an analysis of the data. Adjustments applied to USHCN Version 2 data largely account for the impact of instrument and siting changes, although a small overall residual negative (“cool”) bias appears to remain in the adjusted maximum temperature series. Nevertheless, the adjusted USHCN temperatures are extremely well aligned with recent measurements from instruments whose exposure characteristics meet the highest standards for climate monitoring. In summary, we find no evidence that the CONUS average temperature trends are inflated due to poor station siting.

So there is a slight bias from these improperly placed weather sensors. But it shows that the Earth is cooling, not warming. Lol.

PoG, you read that wrong. It didn't say that the temps are less than they were before. It said that the temps are a little less than the true correct temp at that location. So, here bias toward cooling means bias toward less heating.

We have passed the point of no return and can expect a future in which lethal heatwaves and temperatures in excess of 50C (120F) are common in the tropics; where summers at temperate latitudes will invariably be baking hot, and where our oceans are destined to become warm and acidic, according to Bill McGuire, emeritus professor of geophysical and climate hazards at University College London.

He said, “I know a lot of people working in climate science who say one thing in public but a very different thing in private. In confidence, they are all much more scared about the future we face, but they won’t admit that in public. I call this climate appeasement and I believe it only makes things worse. The world needs to know how bad things are going to get before we can hope to start to tackle the crisis.”

OK. That's his prediction. Here's mine: heatwaves will be no more severe than they have been for thousands of years, and the fraction of people who die in them will continue to decline; temperatures in excess of 50C will continue to be rare in the tropics, occurring, as they have for thousands of years, only on late spring and summer afternoons in desert or arid areas; the oceans will continue to be cold and mildly alkaline, with their average temperature increasing by less than 1C and their average pH decreasing by less than 0.1. My predictions will come true as a matter of objective physical fact, and his will be falsified.
He said, “I know a lot of people working in climate science who say one thing in public but a very different thing in private. In confidence, they are all much more scared about the future we face, but they won’t admit that in public.

But that is a lie. In fact, most scientists with relevant expertise are aware that global warming hysteria is wildly overblown, and there is actually little cause for concern; but they are afraid to state these facts publicly because of the potential career-ending repercussions.
I call this climate appeasement and I believe it only makes things worse. The world needs to know how bad things are going to get before we can hope to start to tackle the crisis.”

I call that bull$#!+.

What an absurd load of twaddle.

Frankly, one should just plan for the inevitable future at this point.

We're leaving China and moving back to Spain because I can't buy land here. We're going to settle in Spain, in the north, since Spain is generally a high country and won't have to deal with encroaching sea waves. We've looked at six potential sites, all affordable. Our property will have a local aquifer and space for some plants/a garden to supplement rising costs at the supermarket (but not replace, we're not trying survivalists.) We'll build a simple house, with a large basement to take advantage of natural cooling. We recognize that as educated first worlders, we're not going to be bearing the brunt of this problem like folks in the Global South will be, but still making sure we're making a home that will be comfortable fifty years from now.

Presbyterianism
4 By region
4.1 Europe
4.1.1 Scotland
4.1.2 England
4.1.3 Wales
4.1.4 Ireland
4.1.5 France
John Knox (1505–1572), a Scot who had spent time studying under Calvin in Geneva, returned to Scotland and urged his countrymen to reform the Church in line with Calvinist doctrines.

In England, Presbyterianism was established in secret in 1592. Thomas Cartwright is thought to be the first Presbyterian in England. Cartwright's controversial lectures at Cambridge University condemning the episcopal hierarchy of the Elizabethan Church led to his deprivation of his post by Archbishop John Whitgift and his emigration abroad. Between 1645 and 1648, a series of ordinances of the Long Parliament established Presbyterianism as the polity of the Church of England. Presbyterian government was established in London and Lancashire and in a few other places in England, although Presbyterian hostility to the execution of Charles I and the establishment of the republican Commonwealth of England meant that Parliament never enforced the Presbyterian system in England.
Some, such as Crown Court (Covent Garden, London), St Andrew's (Stepney, London) and Swallow Street (London), did not join the English denomination, which is why there are Church of Scotland congregations in England such as those at Crown Court, and St Columba's, Pont Street (Knightsbridge) in London.

Presbyterianism first officially arrived in Colonial America in 1644 with the establishment of Christ's First Presbyterian Church in Hempstead, New York. The Church was organized by the Rev. Richard Denton.

Another notable church was established in 1703 the first Presbytery in Philadelphia. In time, the presbytery would be joined by two more to form a synod (1717) and would eventually evolve into the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America in 1789.

Presbyterian Churches are the biggest and by far the most influential Protestant denominations in South Korea, with close to 20,000 churches affiliated with the two largest Presbyterian denominations in the country.[41] In South Korea there are 9 million Presbyterians, forming the majority of the 15 million Korean Protestants. In South Korea there are 100 different Presbyterian denominations.[42]
India
In the mainly Christian Indian state of Mizoram, Presbyterianism is the largest of all Christian denominations. It was brought there by missionaries from Wales in 1897.

The Presbyterian Church in Vanuatu is the largest denomination in the country, with approximately one-third of the population of Vanuatu members of the church

The biggest Presbyterian church is the National Presbyterian Church in Mexico (Iglesia Nacional Presbiteriana de México), which has around 2,500,000 members and associates and 3000 congregations

In Brazil, the Presbyterian Church of Brazil (Igreja Presbiteriana do Brasil) totals approximately 1,011,300 members;[35] other Presbyterian churches (Independents, United, Conservatives, Renovated, etc.) in this nation have around 350,000 members.

The Presbyterian Church of East Africa, based in Kenya, is particularly strong, with 500 clergy and 4 million members
The Presbyterian Church of South Sudan and Sudan, founded in 1902 by American missionaries in Malakal, was deprived of foreign pastors since 1962 by decision of the Sudanese government but it continued to grow. It is now the 3rd largest Christian church in Sudan with 1'000'000 members
