If immigrants didn't live in NYC the population of the city would be 12.
There's a number of things going on.
Manhattan has become an enclave for the rich. Remember Sex and the City? The Carrie Bradshaws of the world can't afford it.
I like to joke about the rich starving after gentrification pushes regular people out of the greater metropolitan area. But it is a very real problem.
NYC has been metropolitican, with a diverse population, for centuries, as wave after wave of immigrants has come. A lot of the rich pushing up real estate in Manhattan are immigrants. And the poor immigrants are very visible, driving cabs, and such. They are roughly 37% of the pop of NYC ( https://www1.nyc.gov/site/opportunity/r ... ofile.page
"According to the report, between 2005 and 2017 in New York City, basic costs like housing, transportation, childcare and food had risen at nearly twice the rate of incomes." And that was before Covid..https://bkreader.com/2020/01/19/unaffor ... city-home/
