Other people very much want that low income housing because they struggle to be able to afford anything more expensive, due to high real estate costs and high population densities.

Where, exactly?

The New York City area, a wide area surrounding San Francisco all the way down to Los Angeles and San Diego, pretty much all the big cities on the coasts (Boston, Seattle, Portland). The area surrounding London. Paris.
Pretty much all the wealthier big city trendy areas where people want to live.
Toronto, the areas close to Vancouver.

I think there are also shortages of cheaper housing in Sydney and Melbourne, though those are not the best examples since the causes of that is more complicated.

Please provide evidence that immigration is causing housing costs to increase in NYC.

There's a number of things going on.

Manhattan has become an enclave for the rich. Remember Sex and the City? The Carrie Bradshaws of the world can't afford it.

I like to joke about the rich starving after gentrification pushes regular people out of the greater metropolitan area. But it is a very real problem.

NYC has been metropolitican, with a diverse population, for centuries, as wave after wave of immigrants has come. A lot of the rich pushing up real estate in Manhattan are immigrants. And the poor immigrants are very visible, driving cabs, and such. They are roughly 37% of the pop of NYC ( https://www1.nyc.gov/site/opportunity/r ... ofile.page )

"According to the report, between 2005 and 2017 in New York City, basic costs like housing, transportation, childcare and food had risen at nearly twice the rate of incomes." And that was before Covid..

Agree. Plus NYC is mostly an island. You can't just keep building, so people live in New Jersey and whatnot. New Jersey has one of the highest populations of illegal migrants in the US.

My parents house lost in 50% in value as Germany opened its labourmarket to Bosnians, population declined so the demand.

Increased housing cost is good for the native population because the natives own land not the immigrants.
