And the hits just keep on happening for Russia.

Venezuela has seen fit to thaw its relations with the US a tiny bit. Chevron is to resume pumping Venezuelan oil for the time being. Clearly Maduro is looking at Russia and deciding that he may have backed the wrong horse. At least he appears to be covering his bets.

Maduro is sitting on the largest oil reserves in the world. Chevron/USA is sitting on the technology to get to it efficiently. And the markets into which to sell it. Maduro also must be seeing the lukewarm support China is giving to Russia and reading Putin out of the future.

Watch for things to move quickly now in this regard. Though the US is playing its cards very close to its chest, Stevie Wonder could see this is a very good sign for the future. Besides. The US people (well the 10% who could find Venezuela on a map) have been cool with Venezuela for awhile. Most Americans are not aware that we are mad at them. The democrats dislike Maduro but he is not high on their hit list. The Republicans think of the Venezuelans as "good Mexicans" and they just love despots. The independents are sitting in the corner trying to look wise and thinking that telling anyone who asks about Venezuela that they "are independents" and expecting that to answer about any political question explains all. Surprisingly it sort of does.

There's some shocking claims made in this article
The Sydney Herald wrote:I knew the Donetsk and Luhansk regions very well,” he says. “The locals over there basically gave up without fighting. I did not want to fight for the territory that the local people had no desire to fight for themselves.

.....

He says part of his brigade’s task is trying to win over the predominantly Russian-speaking local population, but only about half of them are more loyal to Ukraine than Russia. He says many aren’t actively sabotaging the efforts of Ukrainian soldiers, “they are just waiting” for Russia.

“These people have a Soviet mentality. This region is not very pro-Europe, they lag in development compared to the rest of Ukraine,” he says. “There were some attempts to provide information about our military positions to the Russians, but these attempts have been stopped.

Is this guy lying? Has the Sydney Morning Herald been bribed by Putin.

Then I thought, could it be the Liberals that are lying. The Liberals have claimed that only a tiny, tiny minority of the Ukrainians that lived in the post 2014 borders want to join Russia.

Russians are preparing to take 10.5 thousand Ukrainian children from Luhansk region, - Center of National Resistance

"The Russian occupiers are trying to organize the deportation of children from the Luhansk region to Russia.

"The Russian occupation administration in the temporarily occupied territory of Luhansk region reported that in-depth medical examinations were conducted for 15,000 children from 2 to 17 years of age.

Doctors imported from Russia noted in the examination documents that 70% of these children "need special medical care." It is with such a medical opinion that the Russians cover up the deportation of children to the territory of the Russian Federation.

First, they are placed in specialized health care facilities, then, for several contrived reasons, the children's return home is delayed to encourage the parents to come to the children, after which the families are forbidden to return to the territory of Ukraine."

High time for the west to escalate. Cut Russia off the grid.

I highly, highly doubt that the Kremlin´s thugs have issued its invading soldiers any winter kit . The pig- dogs bastards can either flee Ukraine or freeze to death.

GREAT NEWS ! putin´s pig- dogs Are Freezing To Death In Eastern Ukraine

The Ukrainian army has deployed some of its best brigades to eastern Ukraine, including the 92nd and 93rd Mechanized Brigades and the 1st Presidential Brigade. But these elite Ukrainian formations might not be the biggest killer of Russian troops in the east. Under-trained, under-supplied and ambivalently led, Russians in the region are freezing to death by the dozens. Shocking videos that have circulated online in recent weeks tell a tragic story. The videos, shot by the Ukrainian brigades’ hovering drones, depict Russians in the late stages of hypothermia, so cold and sick that they barely react when the drones drop lethal improvised bombs on them. Thomas Theiner, an ex-soldier who currently is a filmmaker in Kyiv, predicted winter “would kill more Russian soldiers than Ukraine ever could.” He may have been right. Winters in Ukraine start wet and cold then get colder and drier. Eastern Ukraine still is in the wet-cold phase—and it’s brutal. Deep mud mires armored vehicles. Daytime temperatures hover around freezing, while nighttime temperates dip closer to zero degrees Fahrenheit. With preparation, sound leadership and reliable logistics, the conditions are survivable. Soldiers bundle up, sleep in roofed, heated trenches with floors, frequently change their wet socks and eat twice as much as they would on warm days. When they get sick, they evacuate to the rear for rest.

The problem, for the Russian army, is that more and more of its troops are untrained draftees. Officers aren’t leading from the front. And Russian logistics are strained by nonstop Ukrainian bombardment. Starving draftees with no gloves or good boots are huddling in shallow, unheated trenches while their officers squat in abandoned houses potentially miles away, unaware or uncaring as their soldiers succumb to the elements. When you’re wet, hungry and exposed to the nighttime cold, it doesn’t take long for hypothermia to set in. One bad night is enough. Even moderate hypothermia can result in confusion, decreased reflexes and loss of motor skills. Which explains the drone massacre that’s been playing out lately over contested eastern towns such as Svatove, Pavlivka and Bakhmut. Hypothermic Russian troops aren’t even trying to flee when Ukraine’s bomb-armed quadcopter drones buzz overhead. The soldiers barely flinch when a bomb explodes in their fighting position. Wounded troops, lying exposed to the elements, are dying before anyone bothers to rescue them. Expect many, many more Russians to freeze to death as the weather gets worse. “Temperatures are forecasted to drop throughout Ukraine over the next week,” the Institute for the Study of War in Washington, D.C. noted on Saturday.

Was Operation Babylift (1975) fucked up that brought more than 3300 children out of Vietnam?

As to evacuating children from a war zone. Do you enjoy shedding crocodile tears over dead babies?

At least those babies did not need to be oppressed or, worse, become oppressors themselves.

That said, I think their lives could still more worthwhile than, say, yours (or as a matter of fact, mine)

So now that Venezuela is open to a bit of exploitation by multinationals, perhaps the USA army will allow a few basic medications to enter the country?

And the Rich West is the good guy in all its wars, right?

Why don't the Russians just put these children into residential schools and "beat the Ukrainian" out of them? That's how the North America got to be so homogenous in the 1800s.

That's how English became the world's language - through genocide of hundreds of nations. That's how Spanish became so important as well. Genocide.

Perhaps Russian could become the world's main language via this same strategy...

@Szabo

Yeah, you know, when I was in Afghanistan, we lost four guys in my company to an IED. This guy featured in the Wounded Warrior profile survived the IED he got hit with. I think back, and I am so damn lucky to get home alive with all my limbs and not have lifelong burns like this guy has. It makes you appreciate the simple things in life and the important things you took for granted beforehand. I walked away from that with the wisdom of an old man. Proud to be helping Ukrainian refugees too.

See, it seems Putin's reasons for invading Ukraine are not only to crush Ukrainian freedom and democracy but also to exploit the resources of Ukraine to rebuild the Russian empire. Putin views the past Soviet Union as the continuation of the Russian Empire.

When the Soviet Union collapsed, he considered that as the collapse of the Russian Empire. He also views World War I and II as bringing what he views as an "alien power," the United States, into Europe, and he wishes to evict the U.S. Evicting the U.S. from Europe will give Russia a more free hand to rebuild its empire without being checked.

Of course, if Russia is allowed to go unchecked, then they would undoubtedly occupy all of Ukraine without U.S. and European help and probably commit genocide again against Ukraine and engage in Russification of the country to control Ukraine and crush Ukrainian national identity and nationalism.

During the Holodomor, when the Soviet Union existed under Stalin, the purpose of the Holodomor was to crush the Ukrainian independence movement and get the resources of Ukraine. This was so the Soviet Union could pay for industrialization and become a military power. So, the Holodomor was all about crushing Ukrainian independence, subjugating it, and taking its resources while "russifying" Ukraine to keep it under the control of the Soviet Union.

Stalin felt that if Ukrainian independence movements and rebellions were not crushed, Ukraine could secede from the Soviet Union. This would ruin his plans to pay for Soviet industrialization. Therefore, the Holodomor was designed to destroy Ukrainian independence movements, national identity, and culture and subjugate Ukraine to exploit its resources.

Ukraine is indeed indispensable for any sort of Russian imperium. Ukraine is the ‘breadbasket’ of Europe, has a strategically vital location, and important industrial productivity in its east. And that’s even leaving aside the importance of Crimea (which was never, historically speaking, part of a Ukrainian nation). This is why Putin was frothing at the mouth after Maidan, and why he finally made the reckless decision to invade. In the chess game of international geopolitics, his opponents were threatening to capture his queen.

The problems facing the Soviet leaders were somewhat different. There was never any chance of Ukraine gaining independence - the decisive and overwhelming Bolshevik victory in the Russian Civil War had seen to that. And no other nation could realistically threaten to wrest it away either, until the Nazi invasion in 1941. No, the reason for the ‘Holodomor’ was to secure the collectivisation of agriculture, to take the Soviet Union’s agricultural production under direct government control, in order to make the industrialisation of the Soviet Union as a whole possible. After all, even in Britain the Industrial Revolution was preceded by an agricultural revolution, without which the industrial revolution would not have been possible. Stalin was fully aware of this, as was Mao about 25 years later. Without securing agricultural output, without taking it under state control, Stalin’s Five Year Plans would have been a house built on sand. The destruction of Ukraine’s (rather weak at the time) nationalist independence elements was not the primary aim, but merely a secondary one in the 1930s. For Putin right now, it’s clearly the primary aim.
