Before Trump was elected in 2016, I called Trump a threat to freedom and democracy and a national security threat to the United States. I have always said that about Trump. You cannot support Trump and say you support the U.S. Constitution or believe in freedom or democracy or in people's right to vote and to be heard. You cannot support Trump and claim you are an American patriot. If you support Trump, you are clearly against and oppose the U.S. Constitution and what it stands for.

Given Trump's statements as written below, the Republicans have stated they support the U.S. Constitution. However, Trump has clearly stated that he is against the U.S. Constitution. So, when will the Republicans denounce Trump and cut all ties with Trump and Trump-like candidates? Will Republicans choose the U.S. Constitution, or will they choose people like Trump, who has made his words clear that he wants to tear up the Constitution and made it unmistakable in his own words?

Ashley Pratte Oates wrote:Many in the political class who have criticized former President Donald Trump as a threat to democracy, especially after the deadly Capitol insurrection, have been proved right once again.

In a post on his social media site, Truth Social, over the weekend, Trump called for all “rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution” to be terminated to overturn the 2020 election and put him back in power. He was responding to the release of internal Twitter emails showing how the social media platform’s executives debated before the 2020 election about allowing links to a New York Post story about material reportedly found on the laptop of Hunter Biden, President Joe Biden’s son.

Those of us who’ve taken a stand against Trump feel vindicated by this truly jarring post after years of being called alarmists. But it’s a sad day for democracy when a former US President is calling for the termination of our nation’s founding document and principles.

Given that Trump swore an oath to protect, defend and uphold the Constitution at his 2017 inauguration, this should give us all pause as he runs for the presidency again.

Not surprisingly, many of those within the GOP leadership remain silent on rebuking Trump for this, just as they remained silent after the January 6, 2021, insurrection and instead used their platforms to defend Trump’s dangerous narrative that the 2020 election was stolen.

Former Vice President Mike Pence told a South Carolina radio station on Monday that every federal official takes an oath to uphold the Constitution, according to The Hill. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who said in January 2021 that Trump “provoked” the mob at the Capitol, said he plans to address the former President’s comments on the Constitution at his weekly press conference Tuesday. Sen. John Thune of South Dakota, the No. 2 Senate Republican, told CNN he disagrees with Trump’s latest remarks but stopped short of saying whether they disqualify him from running in 2024. Another member of the GOP leadership team, Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, called Trump’s social media post “certainly irresponsible.”

Of course, many Republicans would be the first to tell you that their party platform is based on defending the Constitution.

But rather than draw a line in the sand and cut ties with Trump, knowing the dangerous threat he poses, they continue to try to curry favor with him while putting the safety of the American people and the best interests of our democracy in jeopardy.

Let's say for the sake of argument, that everything Trump said about the 2020 election was true and that he indeed had the election win stolen from him in the biggest fraudulent election in US history.

Does it then still follow that the US Constitution be totally abrogated and Trump reinstalled, presumably before 2024? No, of course not.

So what I suggest that since Trump is registered as a Presidential candidate for the 2024 election, that his comments are psychological warfare designed to try and deligitimize his presumed political opponent in 2024, Joe Biden.

No the right question is when are centrists and progressives going to wake up and smell the coffee? When are centrist and progressives going to realise that its high time to flush the American Constitution down the toilet? When are Centrist and progressives going to wake up and realise what suckers they are?

When are Centrists and Progressives going to start asking themselves how they ended up with a President like Trump and a Supreme Court majority that only represents 25% of the citizens.

When are Washington Democrats are going to realise that the time for law abiding, the time for constitutional gymnastics is long, long, long past its sell by date? When are Washington Democrats going to realise what a shameful day Jan 6th was. Shameful that they hadn't got to the Congress building first and burnt it to the ground in protest at their lack of representation in the Senate?

That would be throwing the baby out with the bathwater...

Interesting how no one throws bathwater out the window now, but the saying remains. In the late 1800s, Boston had piped water into the city, but hadn't done anything about sewage or wastewater. Which was causing all manner of grief. So the city banned bathing, except when ordered by a doctor..

Btw, while there are several problems here, like the electoral college and the need for more robust national oversight of elections, the underlying cause is corruption. Killing the constitution would likely make that worse.

In the last 34 years the Republicans have won the popular vote for the Presidency once. Yet they have a secure Conservative majority on the Supreme Court. Do you really think that Republicans would accept the situation if things were reversed? The Democrats are total suckers.

You've put a string of words together, but they don't come together to make a coherent argument.

Put simply, you're still throwing the baby out with the bathwater...
