Can you elaborate what you mean by this ?

@orphan

Well, the working poor have made my life much easier. The question is, have we made their life easier and what can we do to ensure they can move up the socio-economic ladder?

I can’t think of a specific instance where a poor person directly saved my life. A doctor did save my life when I was about 11 years old. He was likely in an upper income bracket. I have donated blood several times, so conceivably one of those pints helped save a poor person.

Undoubtedly, in the chain of causation, a poor person will have been in the production process of a drug that saved my life. On the other hand, a poor person may have been in the production line of a bullet that took someone’s life.

Did the poor save my life? Too many times to count.

For me? Poor Latin Americans and white Americans and African Americans, and Asian Americans who are poor saved my life countless of times. For me they are the best of people. From my family onwards.

Those who believe the poor are inferior are non thinkers.

Where did you live where your life was constantly in danger? Did you have the means to move to a safer place?

Where did you live where you thought erroneously that all poor people are a threat to your life? Some gated community full of rich, arrogant assholes who never saw anyone who was not exactly the same as them? :D

You said you lived in a place where people "saved my life countless of times" which means your life must have been in danger "countless of times." Where was that? I have never lived in a gated community.

Saving your life is about sharing your resources, knowledge and helping others out when they are in need of help. I have relied on others to help me in times of trouble, the same as when they were in trouble I helped them.

My parents were very poor people who came from poverty. They became who they became. I am proud they proved with their actions in life that poor people can achieve anything in this world. They are human. Poor people are human. And unfortunately many people who are arrogant people think they are not.

Empathy is important. Sympathy is only for those ignorant ones who think they are somehow better than the ones they refuse to empathize with.

No, Robert Urbanek, poor people are the best of humanity. They got to struggle and they got to use their wits, but above all they need to rely on each other and cooperate to be able to keep going in life. Rugged individualism and ignoring your neighbor is for people wealthy enough to go it alone. Most communities filled with poor people got to find a way of solving problems as a group. The rugged individualism never works when resources are scarce. Though rich people would love competition and violence to be the norm with poverty and socialism and largesse to be the norm for the wealthy. In the end? If you lack generosity in general you are wasting your life.

When I watch the news and a reporter talks about someone saving a life, they mean someone literally rescued someone from death, such as pulling someone out of a burning building or saving someone from drowning. I guess we have different ideas about what "saving a life" means.
