Playing the devil's advocate here, reading the news it actually does make perfect sense not just given the language of the law but also given the Establishment Clause.

According to the article, the Bible is only being banned in elementary school, I'm not sure how can you teach about the Bible to small kids in a non-religious way at all (keeping in mind it is unconstitutional to do it otherwise). Even before the law, I at least would find it hard to teach it in a way appropriate for their stage of development in a non-confessional way as it does seem tricky to do so without touching on topics a 2nd grader will likely not understand anyway.

In fact, there is legal precedent that they can't. It's not a free speech violation for districts to enforce it.

It's why it's not a free speech violation for districts to ban public school teachers from teaching phrenology, astrology, climate change denial, creationism and similar topics as if they were science by keeping them out of the curriculum. And I am pretty sure you're fine with it.

Even worse for you, for a public school teacher - a public official with a captive audience - to decide to stop teaching Shakespeare for purely personal ideological reasons is cancellation by definition. And yes, it has already happened.

After looking a bit more, this would not be the first time Shakespeare has been banned in US school districts. It's happened in 1980, 1996 and 2012:

Also on the list of removed books is Rethinking Columbus: The Next 500 Years, a 20-year-old textbook, which includes an essay by Tucson author Leslie Silko, a supporter of the ethnic studies program, Salon noted. The book "offers teaching strategies and readings that teachers can use to help students think about the perspectives that are took often silenced in the traditional curriculum," according to the book's editor, Bill Bigelow.

"The only other time a book of mine was banned was in 1968, when the apartheid government in South Africa banned 'Strangers in Their Own Country,' a curriculum I'd written that included a speech by then-imprisoned Nelson Mandela," Bigelow told the N.Y. Daily News.

Various works of Shakespeare have been banned in recent U.S. history, including Twelfth Night in Merrimack, N.H., in 1996, and The Merchant of Venice in Midland, Michigan, in 1980.

The Tempest is the basis for the 1956 film Forbidden Planet, which introduced the world to Robby the Robot, and the 2010 stinker of the same name, starring Helen Mirren.

In all these cases, I think there was consensus the ban went too far. I wonder if this will happen this time too.
