Colleges and universities are bloated and grossly inefficient and offer degrees that are useless in the private sector but could meet the BA/BS degree requirement of some government jobs--like Asian Studies, Black Studies, Women's Studies, etc. Utterly pointless and useless degrees that saddle the holder with immense debt while more or less labelling them as "dummy" simultaneously. What we should be doing is suing colleges and universities for consumer fraud. Colleges and universities are corporations. They are businesses. The fact that many of them do not turn a profit does not mean that they do not engage in the same sorts of frauds as other businesses. Students need to have the same protections against predatory colleges and their often worthless products/services as consumers have consumer protections against unscrupulous car and insurance salesmen or stockbrokers. It's outrageous that such expensive products/services are offered to the public with no consumer protections whatsoever.
Nice troll Blackjack. Way to inculcate your usual racist do whistling into the post. Also.
One. The reason students are not treated like consumers is that they are not consumers. They are welfare recipients to the colleges. There is absolutely no reason for colleges and universities be more efficient. None. Why? Because the US government will simply subsidize anything the colleges want to charge and expect the students to pay it back later. And where do these interest payments go?
Two. Student loans constitute a 1.5 trillion dollar stimulus to the economy. The total student loan debt is....wait for it....half a trillion dollars more than the US entire credit card debt!
Three. We have far more college graduates than we need. Full stop. It is not so much about what they are majoring in as it is about fixing what is wrong with high schools. High school students today are certainly in possession of much more information than we were in my day. Schools have not changed much in that regard. What has changed is that in my day, if you were to know something, you had to do it analog. Not only did we have access to less information, you had to commit it to memory or go through the whole onerous analog study game to get it back. Not so today. I have in my pocket, instant access to more information that all of the high school and college libraries in the country had 1969. And I even have, in my pocket, a fairly efficient method of sorting trough all of that bullshit. So. Much of that stuff we learned in College is now simply common knowledge available for free to anyone who wants to have it.
Anyway. I like Biden. I agree with Rancid that Bernie has shot his bolt. Nice as he is, and so filled with pathos even yet, he is very much like Rand Paul. As I said once about Australia...It is like my dick. Everybody knows its down there but nobody cares.
The democrats can certainly loose to Trump. It would not be hard at all. Which candidate can beat him? All of the. Any one of them. But. The democratic party has a marvelous history of circular firing squads. They run really hard left, going after guns, praising a pro-abortion agenda and seeming to forget all about that tiny little block of insignificant voters called "working and middle class white people". Then someone snags the nomination and has to run to beat hell to get back to the middle. And in the process of their hard left run for the nomination they have handed the republicans all of the sound bites they need to cast any one of them as Leon Trotsky. And to fail, as did Trotsky, because these far left ideas are simply not in the best interests of the people. (Or at best gives the impression that they are being ignored.)
If the democrats were smart (and they are not particularly smart) they would run a real centrist right at Trump fatigue. They would ridicule him but but not his supporters. They would run a the Trump voters and the others will follow. What choice do they have otherwise?
