"Wandering Shadows" by Peter Graham in the National Gallery of Scotland collection. I'm not a huge fan of 19th century landscape art, but I saw this painting when I was in Edinburgh and had to stop for a while to take it all in. Probably something to do with the play of light and shadow made it stand out.

Graham's observations of fleeting effects in nature provided the basis for his painting. He captured the transient character of clouds as they float around the mountain tops and descend into the valleys, and recorded their wandering shadows across the slopes. The sense of movement and constant change is echoed in the mountain stream flowing down to the gushing river. One knows too that the presence of the fisherman and sheep, which emphasises the vastness of the rocky terrain, is also temporary. On moving to London, Graham produced series of grand paintings like this, particularly appealing to an urban-based audience.

It's a platinum cast of a real skull, set with 8,601 perfect diamonds. It cost £14 million to produce, and was purchased by "an unnamed investment group" for £50 million.

I am hugely impressed by this, you can zoom in and view the pictures more closely than you ever could in a real museum. The quality is really amazing and their selection of works sublime. If you like art, or if you are an artist yourself, you must absolutely take some time and explore this site.

My apologies for the double post, but the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich is currently exhibiting Josef Albers' studies. His work really is the "liberation of colour" as they say.
