Satire for March 2009 - Page 2 - Politics Forum.org | PoFo

Wandering the information superhighway, he came upon the last refuge of civilization, PoFo, the only forum on the internet ...

Political and non-political satire; all those terribly biased analogies live here.

The republican party is in majour danger of implosion there is no voice of reason rather 5 different voices pulling in different direction. We need a new party drawing the BlueDog Dems and the non Evangelical Right.

Two of those would be considered self evident by everyone not living in a mud hut, the second happened to be the GOP's favourite past time before the election. 800 billion for Bush "small government" 800 billion for Obama big government. Can you stop the difference?

Well the difference is that Europeans live in smaller sized nations with populations much smaller than the US and don't have 10 million illegal aliens milking the system, so it's easier to spend money on health care and those nations don't really have an army to speak of.

[Cut]. None of those factors are relevant. Size of the nation is not relevant, only GDP per capita is (the US's is higher, partly due to a younger population and longer working hours). Size of military budget is irrelevant, because the US despite spending more on military, it also spends more on healthcare (per head). If you wanted to point out something relevant, you could have said something about how American lifestyle (TV, junk food, lack of sports) has led to 1/3 of adult Americans being obese. However, I suspect it also has much to do with the private healthcare system. The fact it costs the individual money dissuades poorer people (who tend to be at risk) from getting preventative care, which costs more money in the long run. Wealth inequality in the US means a lot of richer people over-invest in their own health beyond the point where it is useful.

[SF edit: You should know better than that. Warned.]

Americans were leading producers of soy.
Large parts of the developing world see their farmer grow cash crops, as importing US soy is cheaper then buying local.
Bush announces biofuels funding.
American farmers switch from soy to corn - because growing corn for biofuels gets subsidies and is more profitable.
Developing world farmers dont switch.
Harvest comes and there is much less soy available, so price shoots up.
Replace soy with a couple other food stuffs and repeat.

Also, since corn is in demand for biofuels, corn prices go up as growers can and do sell to biofuels plants to make more money.

Most babies died at child birth, and it was vital to mantain a healthy Clan so abortion would be idiotic in those times.
