Satire for February 2009 - Page 5 - Politics Forum.org | PoFo

Wandering the information superhighway, he came upon the last refuge of civilization, PoFo, the only forum on the internet ...

Political and non-political satire; all those terribly biased analogies live here.

It's pretty horrible, isn't it? But they actually had the same problem with John F. Kennedy, when you have a President that isn't exactly bad looking you'll always experience problems with ridiculing them based on their appearance.

Caricature always results in the exaggeration of prominent features you goons.

@ Okonkwo

I appreciate the Canadian content - but why do you have it?

There seem to be a whole lot of Canadians here, every second Lobby thread is someone from Montréal introducing himself, so I thought 'why not'. I also find Canadian politics and politicians interesting.

What an appropriate comment for a satire thread..

The best This Modern World I've seen. It made me smile (not laugh, but I've never smiled at a TMW before).

^^^ This one is funny because it underlines how oil-rich regions often don't diversify their economies very much. But Hugo Chavez is doing more or less than the capitalists to ensure food and other resources get developed in Venezuela alongside oil?

You see Qatz, the oil profits pedestal Chavez is standing on in this pictures represents the relation of the price of oil to his electoral success. Chavez's 'success' all the socialists are so incredibly proud of comes mainly from his oil gainings, as the price for oil drops so does his electoral success and credibility. They are more dependant upon each other than Chavez would admit and he is going to face some serious problems if the drop in oil prices will continue as his "wide base of support" is proportional to his momentary economic success.
Not that you would be willing to accept this explanation, I sure know that. ;)

Okonwo, my only question to you is, do you think the people of Venezuela will want to revert to the neoliberal policies of former governments if the price of oil destroys the economy?

Or do you think they will demand a much more severe form of communism?

Or will they turn to foreign aggression - maybe against Colombia - in a fit of populist rage?

---

Or none of the above, the people of Venezuela have escaped the populist haze of commercial TV?

Very possibly, yes. If Chávez will disappoint them (which will inevitably happen sooner or later) they will turn to the opposition. Half of Venezuela is already on their side, but they are social democrats (notably led by the UNT, Un Nuevo Tiempo) so there won't be any Chile-esque complete restructuring of the economy. Merely a more healthy, freer market.

QatzelOk wrote:Or do you think they will demand a much more severe form of communism?

There is this tiny, tiny percentage of possibility that that will happen but I severely doubt it. It is actually more likely that once the opposition assumes power the former Chávistas will form some sort of rebel group, they have already been arming themselves and threatening members of the opposition en masse.

QatzelOk wrote:Or will they turn to foreign aggression - maybe against Colombia - in a fit of populist rage?

No. I actually think that a Venezuela ruled by social democrats could greatly improve the relations with Colombia.
