A New York jury found Donald Trump guilty of multiple felonies at his hush-money trial, making him the first former US president to be convicted of crimes.

Trump was found guilty Thursday on all 34 counts of falsifying business records to conceal a hush-money payment to adult-film actress Stormy Daniels just before the 2016 election. Prosecutors said Trump led a broader scheme to influence the election by concealing stories of his alleged sexual encounters with women.

The conviction creates a daunting legal and political path for Trump as he faces President Joe Biden in November as the presumptive Republican nominee. Trump, who has repeatedly attacked the case as Democratic election interference, could be sentenced to as many as four years in prison but is certain to appeal and may remain free during the process. Trump has denied having an affair with Daniels and falsifying records.

The verdict is one of the most consequential moments in US political history, forcing voters to decide whether they want a convicted felon in the White House. But Trump, a billionaire who made his fortune in real estate, retains an iron grip on the Republican party despite his history of legal and personal scandals.

Is MAGA over?

No, not at all. In fact, this will fuel MAGA. Political witch hunt this, deranged prosecutor that. Everyone else's fault except for the guy that committed business crimes.

Calling this the "hush money" trial is really fucking stupid though.

The hush money payment (Settlement) isn't the crime. It was trying to cover up the hush money payment by falsifying business records. It was really a falsification of business records trial.

Indeed, although if the records had been transparent it kinda undermines the rationale for the payments.

Committed Trump voters will react like that, but how about Independents and even anti-Trump Republicans? Is Trump even electable after this?

True, but better to own your shit behavior than to be a coward weasel and try and hide it all. Thus, he deserves to be a felon.

I think independents, like real independents were already favoring Biden 2/3. Maybe it would move the needle a bit more to Biden. I have a hard time believing that this is FINALLY the thing that gets people to turn away from Trump. I think people that support Trump, will continue to support him.

For anti-Trump Republicans, this might give them the excuse they need to not vote for him, but I'm not sure. When we have spineless dip shits like Nikki Hailey coming out and saying she's going to vote for Trump despite EVERYTHING. Makes it pretty clear that Republicans are cowards.

Meanwhile, we have the state of Texas trying to disenfranchise entire cities. They want to make an electoral college where each county gets 1 vote. This basically means that Rural Texas will decide for the whole of Texas. Despite that vast majority of the Texas GDP coming from the cities that will be disenfranchised. If you want to understand what that looks like. In the last Senate election with Cruz versus Beto. Beto got like 43% of the vote. If you replay that election under this electoral college, he would have got about 7% of the electoral votes. Yes, 43% down to 7%

The Republican party is a threat to democracy. No other way to view this. @Istanbuller, your hot take is shit. Complete and utter false equivalence bullshit. What total nonsense.

The Republican party fucking sucks. Complete spineless cowards and traitors to democratic principals.

Isn't it a little bit absurd to blame Republican Party for barring Trump from getting elected? @Rancid. It is a blue state who convicts Republican Party's candidate.

It is Democrats. You are on par with Putin and other dictators around the world now. :eh:

Republicans screwed up massively when they let a crook get control of their party.

This was Rule of Law enforcing the law, you don't have to like it, but you will have to lump it.

They also use judicial system in Russia to barr other candidates and call it "rule of law".

Meet Putin's rival Alexei Navalny who got convicted before election. He was also blamed for being extremist. Sounds familiar?

Navalny, 47, had been serving a prison sentence on numerous trumped-up charges when he was sentenced in 2023 to 19 years on a new set of charges, including extremism.

As to be expected.

And no, this means nothing.

Except that parts of the US law system is now captured by politics and is used against their democratic opponents. Its called lawfare. Its a thing now.

The whole court case is completely absurd. Trump gets criminalized for the most normal thing everyone not just in the USA, but worldwide does.

You dont pay taxes based on the highest legal estimate of the value of your property. You pay taxes based on the lowest legal estimate of the value of the object that you can get.

Duh ?

Everyone does that. Everyone inside the USA does that. Everyone outside the USA does that.

Its one of the reasons why the rich dont pay taxes, but thats not Trumps fault. He's just doing the exact same thing as everyone else, but somehow, magically, in his case its a crime, but its of course still cool for everybody else.

Really very much like how when Wikileaks does regular journalism its a crime, and Juliane Assange gets tortured to death in full public view since a decade for it, but everybody else can do journalism just fine. Well, sort of. The moment you actually challenge power they try to smear you, too. Claims of rape for both Assange himself as well as for example also Russell Brand or for that matter and even also Trump himself sometimes, based on his "locker talk" incident. In none of these cases is there a single woman who actually accuses any of these men of rape. Such women exist for Biden, and for that matter also for Bill Clinton. Not an issue because they are part of the system.

Or demand absurd sums from people with no money, like the 900 millions with Alex Jones. Etc.

The bottom line is that the USA is a failing empire and people in power still try to defend it. Somebody like Trump who recognizes this empire is over is not convenient and has to be stopped, no matter what.

By the way, they refused to give RFK jr protection. For good reason every presidential candidate gets security protection. But not RFK jr. Same thing. He too doesnt want to continue to run the USA as an empire. They too want to get rid of him.

Why the democrats insist on running with Biden as presidential candidate is their secret anyway. Dumbest idea possible. But maybe they really just cant find anyone who wants to risk it. Either way its really funny theres people out there who want a person suffering from advanced stages of dementia to run for president.

If everything is done correctly during the elections, Trump will be the next president for sure. All this lawfare only helps him becoming more popular. But I wouldnt be surprised if he has an "accident" or if they manage to manipulate the elections enough to avoid him. Not that it will do them any good. The US empire is over and thats that. But these people are clearly stupid.

Trump was not barred from running.

He committed crimes and was convicted of it, which doesn't happen to the powerful in Russia...

Kinda the opposite..

Trump is barred. He will not be able to run for president.

It is Democrats who are in power. Trump is also the opposition candidate like Navalny was. Navalny and Trump convictions are almost identical.
