Pentagon budget to kill F-22, pumps up Special Ops - Page 2 - Politics Forum.org | PoFo

Wandering the information superhighway, he came upon the last refuge of civilization, PoFo, the only forum on the internet ...

Military vehicles, aircraft, ships, guns and other military equipment. Plus any general military discussions that don't belong elsewhere on the board.

Don't you get it? If you make a claim, then the burden of proof is yours to back up such claim.

Or will their price go up to compensate for the cancellation of future orders?

You know if Lockheed and Boeing wanted to milk the US government as much as possible and make up for any revenue lost due to the cancellation, they can just make the parts and repairs very very expensive.

Meh, by the time anyone gets anywhere near anything approaching the F-22 we'll just be wiping anything out of the air from UAVs dropping a dozen or so advanced generation missiles. Cheaper, more deadly, faster.

What the fuck do we need the F-22 for? Who the fuck is going to bomb us? We have a few thousand miles of ocean patrolled by 14 fleets of carrier groups which can each take on almost any country on the planet single-handedly for up to a year without reinforcement, satellite imagery that can detect Kim Jong Il sneeze (we know where he is, not where Osama is), and UAVs that can bomb the shit out of anywhere within the distance Osama can punt a football (and everyone within a few hundred yards of him)... and we still have enough nukes to destroy all of humanity within 15 minutes.

Directing our future investments in on-the-ground assets that can be deployed rapidly to eliminate a threat quietly before it develops is what we need. If i were Dictator of America, I'd mothball half the fucking Navy and invest in exactly what Obama is.

Soon the US will just have a bunch of satellites carrying tungsten rods orbiting the world. No need for anything else!

This would be a violation of international treaty, and Bush is no longer in office. Obama won't stand for that shit.

We just need the fleet of various satellites that have various types of imaging, and bases (usually naval) to deploy UAVs. UAVs aren't necessarily robotic; they can be remotely controlled, combining the intelligence of a pilot with the smaller size and greatly enhanced performance (and range and payload) of a UAV. A few drones out to detect and feed radar back, a few standoff platforms to launch missiles, and a naval fleet that can take out anything else, as well as fire cruise missiles and UAVs with laser guided bombs. Greatly reduced cost, very little risk of (American) life, incredibly effective network.

Assuming that we get the airborne lasers (and probably shipborne) nailed down and the power issues solved, the only threats we face are terrorist attacks. With advances in scanning technology in ports and such and an effectively counterterrorism force that can deploy...

Look. China is a huge trading partner; we aren't going to war with them. They will be political standoffs for a while, but they need us. Russia is more concerned with its front yard. Kim Jong Il will die some day, and it wouldn't take much for North Korea to topple. Venezuela will never gain a bloc.

The remaining mess is the Middle East, which there is no solution to.

Who are we trying to gain aerial supremacy over again?

I don't say China, because as of now, the Chinese can help us in a alot of areas such as Islamic terrost networks and North Korea.

What a Joke, China is the main threat to the United States. They are not moving closer to the US they are positioning themselves to replace us.

Iran. They have a fleet of F-14 Tomcats, which, although slightly outdated, are still quite capable of blowing a few Eagles, Vipers, and Hornets out of the air.

Only economically, not militarily (though our military will no doubt suffer when our economy falls out from under us)

Yes, but that's why we have the ammount of Raptors that we do. And that's all we need to take out some shitty F-14's from the 70's.

But all this macho fighter pilot talk complaining of the Pentagon's actions concerning this is the same kind of talk which got two Air Force Chiefs of Staff thrown out and replaced.

We're in a spec ops war people, our real enemies won't be arriving in Chinese J-XX's or Russian PAK FA's.

The F-22 and most high speed fighters are useless for the man on the ground in an insurgency or counter-terrorist situation.

Which still has the Phoenix system.

s.

Planning for the same type of war didnt pan out to well in WW1. RIght now we are fighting loosely organized Terrorists and Insurgents, tommorow we might be fighting over resources with another power. Point is we must maintain our Military dominance in regular warfare alongside improving our irregular fire power.

Right. Well, when Russia and China start fielding significant numbers of fifth-gen fighters, maybe THEN we can talk about keeping up with the Joneses.

You know ww2 germany had hundreds of jets that could fly circles around their enemies, and ballistic missiles, weaponry a generation or two ahead of what the rest had to offer....didn't do shit. Going the expensive route, even if you can afford it in the short term, will ensure you end up surrounded and outnumbered on all fronts.

Good Special Forces units don't need a lot of money - if anything, an abundance in such units would make them less effective. They need to be hardy men, not kids with fancy toys.

And even if you choose to put more money into SF operations and units - how much will it be? A few billions, tops. Don't produce 5-10 F-22s and you've got enough money to last you a few decades.
