Why the Seals? - Page 2 - Politics Forum.org | PoFo

Wandering the information superhighway, he came upon the last refuge of civilization, PoFo, the only forum on the internet ...

Military vehicles, aircraft, ships, guns and other military equipment. Plus any general military discussions that don't belong elsewhere on the board.

I know someone who is very close to an SAS member. He's adamant that the SAS are known to be best and that the American's employ them for the most difficult operations.

Maybe it has to do with their equipment. They used large helicopters flying in from Kandahar, I understand. That's long distance flying.

Just think, if the West's military apparatus hadn't killed a few million people, invaded a few countries, stole a lot of oil contracts and destroyed a few Arab governments... bin Laden would still be alive.

The West has saved the world yet again.

Thank you, Seals.

Keep spinning those balls for our entertainment.

I think you'll find they were SBS. But even so its hardly an embarrassment for them as their operation seems to have been to make contact with rebel forces. Hence the diplomat who escorted them. It wasn't an operation in enemy territory but an attempt to give support to a potential friend.

As I understand it was the nightstalkers that actually flew them in. An sitting in a heli for a while is hardly a skill.

I used to think it was a skill when I had to do it. The noise, the vibration, and the smelly guys around me were a pain in the behind. After a couple of hours, you're ready to shoot yourself.

SAS are pansies who got captured by Libyans

First of all, no one is certain that the soldiers were part of an SAS team. In fact word coming from those who are in the know suggest it was actually an SBS team. Secondly, given the situation, whoever it was did exactly the right thing. They were there to make contact and establish communications with the rebels. Blowing dozens of them away would be a strange method to use in order accomplish this. Thirdly, anyone who thinks of the SAS as 'pansies' clearly hasn't got the slightest clue.

pansies compared to American SEAL team 6, British military is a joke anyways only fit to parade for the queen.

Delta Force was based on the SAS and used expertise from those guys; I guess then they are the offspring of pansies?

This is going to turn into one of those pointless "who are the best soldiers/Special Ops" arguments.

This is the sort of thing I'd normally look up before writing...I'm a little rushed for time.

One of the US news agents said the SEALS were chosen over the Delta Force because they trained and deployed in larger groups than the DF,
and whoever made the call decided that because the compound had two principle buildings, the large of the two was chosen. It struck me as odd since both groups are so versatile, I'd have thought they'd train in small squads, then train more by putting multiple squads together as needed.

Anyway, two days after that aired, some congressman was grousing the whole gig had been poorly handled, ObL ought to have been taken alive for questioning and that they should have used more US agents to facillitate the goal.

Take it for what its worth, those are the two reports I heard.

As for the who's best debate, couldn't we all just be damned pleased someone's doing this? As Shakespeare said, "We've French quarrels enough"

I assume that you are either on a wind up mission or you have little or no knowledge of military affairs. Red Star has already pointed out that the US Special Forces were based upon and received start-up training from the British Special Forces. You refer to the assumed brilliance of the Navy SEALs while accusing the British military of being a joke. Apparently you are ignorant of the fact that it was the SBS - whom the SAS regard as 'Tier 2' Special Forces - that trained - and continue to do so - the Navy SEALs upon its creation.

Next time US marines get captured without a fight get back to me Red.

The SBS team in Libya did not 'get captured without a fight', they opted to surrender for diplomatic and political reasons. They were handed a mission and made a decision not to take an action that would seriously harm that mission. Anyway, I'll bite: next time the SAS kill an American hostage during a rescue mission by throwing a grenade at them get back to me, Oxymoron.

I have no intention of this descending into the pathetic bickering so often seen where children who have played a few COD games consider themselves military experts. Delta Force, the Navy Seals, the British SAS, SBS, Australian SAS and so on are made up of incredibly fit, skilled and dedicated individuals. All have made serious errors - some more than others, I add - and all have had amazing successes, that does not make any one regiment/squadron/force any better than the other(s). However, I will simply not accept your absurd assumption that the British military are a joke nor your ignorant rebuttal of the skill of the British Special Forces based upon the Libya incident.

In that case I must agree with you to some extent. The ridiculous excuse that they were 'ambushed' in open water was an absolute disgrace. May I ask whether you have served in the military, Oxymoron?
