It doesn't depend solely on that, but it does hinge heavily on it. I'd further add that success in life also depends, especially in industrialized countries, on how
astute you are. Even if you can't hack a BS for example (either due to lacking the mental capacity or due to sloth or pressing life conditions), you can still get a trucking license and make a very good living, if you have the sense to actually go after it.

Was anyone else very surprised by that fact? Does that mean that there is a negative correlation between IQ and skin pigmentation within a single race? Would this hold for all races?
For the record I'm somewhat agnostic on the merit of race-IQ variation, but let's assume for a moment it has merit. I'd say yes, it makes sense for pigmentation to be negatively correlated with IQ for two reasons. First, darker-skinned people evolved darker skin as a response to warmer climates, which also happen to feature longer growing seasons and more abundant food, thus reducing the need for innovation and naturally human capacity for it. Second, darker pigmentation inhibits the production of vitamin D, which has a negative impact on brain size.
The correlation isn't perfect, however. Atlantic-Mediterranean people have been found to be every bit as intelligent as Nordic and Alpine people, although atlanto-meds from the Iberian peninsula are slightly less so due to Moorish admixture.
